Predatory Publishers, Journals and Conferences: How to Spot Them Online
“Predatory journals and publishers are entities that prioritise self-interest at the expense of scholarship and are characterised by false or misleading information, deviation from best editorial and publication practices, a lack of transparency, and/or the use of aggressive and indiscriminate solicitation practices.” (Grudniewicz et al, 2019).
Predatory practices are a threat to academic knowledge dissemination, so it is important to be able to recognise and evaluate a spectrum of practices.
By the end of this session, participants will be better able to:
- Define predatory publishers, journals and conferences
- Describe a spectrum of low-risk to high-risk practices
- Evaluate a real example of a solicitation email from a publisher
- Locate and discuss useful checklists to use when considering submitting to a journal, publisher or conference
- Discuss associated risks
- Identify where to get further support
