Open research and the media: getting your research into the news

Open research and the media: getting your research into the news Online

Media coverage of your research is an important way to increase its impact, but how can you maximise its potential to get into the news?

At this event we will hear from Dr Anna Barker from the School of Law at the University of Leeds, about her project; “Fostering safer parks for women and girls through multi-agency collaboration, knowledge exchange and the co-design of research-informed guidance”, how it's been covered in the media and the support she has received from Kersti Mitchell in the media team.

We are also very pleased to welcome Andy Tattersall from the University of Sheffield. Focussing on his recent paper: The missing link: the quality of UK local and national online media coverage of research, Andy will discuss the importance of providing as much supplementary information in any media releases, especially links to primary research outputs which are often neglected.

Anna Barker is an Associate Professor in Criminal Justice and Criminology in the School of Law. Anna is interested in researching the governance, regulation and policing of urban spaces and public parks. This includes studying the social role of parks in the past, the present and the future.

Kersti Mitchell is Media Relations Manager at the University of Leeds and former producer and reporter at BBC Look North.

Andy Tattersall is Information Specialist in the School of Medicine and Population Health at the University of Sheffield. A former journalist Andy has worked at Sheffield since 2001 with a remit to provide support and guidance to staff and students in their use of technology and information resources.
